Ben Hartley is a Consultant Paediatric Otolaryngologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London. He is one of the leading specialists in the U.K.

Paediatric otolaryngology is better known as ENT. It is the study of ear nose and throat diseases in children.

Common children's ENT problems include tonsil problems (recurrent tonsillitis and obstructive sleep apnoea) which sometimes require tonsillectomy. Blocked noses and snoring may be due to adenoids and helped by adenoidectomy. Hearing problems and recurrent ear infections in children can be related to glue ear (otitis media with effusion, serous or secretory otitis media) and may need ventilation tube (grommet) insertion. Often however these conditions can be managed without surgery.

Ben Hartley's specialist areas include childrens airway and laryngeal problems, children's voice disorders, neck lumps, thyroglossal cysts, branchial cysts and sinuses in children and also treatment of haemangiomas, cystic hygromas and vascular malformations.

He has helped to develop surgical techniques of small incision cochlear implant surgery and bilateral cochlear implant surgery for children with severe hearing loss. He frequently performs these operations at Great Ormond Street and the Portland Hospitals.

Spice Girl Geri Halliwell spends the day following Ben Hartley and learning about paediatric ENT surgery while filming for her own documentary, behind the scenes at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Child in a Million - This channel 5 television series is following several children from Great Ormond Street Hospital. Episode 4 will follow Kody, one of Ben Hartley's patients through his tongue and mouth surgery for an extensive cystic hygroma.

Kiss it Better - This Charity was launched by Cat Deeley and Stila together with Carmel Allen after Ben Hartley and Professor Martin Elliot sucessfullly removed a large tumour from the neck Carmels one year old daughter Jo Jo. They have successfully raised huge funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Ben Hartley completed the London Marathon in a time of 4.5 hours raising nearly £3500 for Great Ormond Street Childrens Charity. Thank you to all who sponsored him.
